Abstract

State Library of Western Australia (SLWA) has been preparing datasets for hack events since 2012.  In the last two years, the Data and Discovery Team at SLWA have been gradually increasing the organisations’ participation in GovHack events held in WA.

Initially, our datasets included data from our bibliographic records repackaged in more hack friendly formats.  Recently in  2016, we tried something new by publishing a set of volunteer sourced transcriptions of a card index.

The poster will share what we have learned from participating in hack events including: selection of material to publish into datasets, the process for creating datasets, tools we are using to prepare datasets and what attending a hack as mentors has meant for SLWA.  Our participation in hack events has created opportunities for the SLWA datasets and collections to be exposed in a new way.
